cross country skiing is a favorite winter activity in lake namekagonIf you prefer a quieter woods experience, with perhaps a chance to catch a glimpse of some wildlife and banish the cold with a little hard work and sweat, then you might break out the skiis or snowshoes to explore. Hundreds of miles of trails wend throughout the forest, plenty of them specifically groomed for cross country skiing, like the Rock Lake Trail System, The Namekagon Trail, the Drummond Trail, and the American Birkebeiner Trail (also home to the famous American Birkebeiner, America’s largest cross country ski rage, held each February).

Like the snowmobile trails, many of these trails pass near or offer connections to local resorts and restaurants, so you can warm your hands by the fire or grab a drink with friends.

Ice Fishing on Lake Namekagon

ice fishing is a favorite winter activity in lake namekagonLake Namekagon is known for its trophy musky fishing in the warmer seasons, but wintertime brings out plenty of hardy anglers to the ice to set up their shacks and drop a line in hopes of a bite. There are plenty of places to get out on the ice, and if you’re a beginner, plenty of ways to get started. And what’s more, if you head out from a local resort, you’re just a short walk back to warmth and fun by a fireside.

Local Resorts Along Major Trails

Some of our favorites are Staudemeyer’s Four Seasons Resort, which is easily reached by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes, Lakewoods, which actually has a full-service snowmobile stop as well as ice skating areas, and Garmisch USA, which sits on Snowmobile Trail #8.
